Are Your Diseased Trees Registered or Regulated?

If you live in a home with an expansive lot, then you may have a number of different and mature trees in your back garden. You may not be an expert when it comes to landscaping and may prefer a "laissez-faire" approach to upkeep but, occasionally, you may need to deal with an issue. If one or more of the trees in your garden appears to be in trouble, what do you need to know about repair or removal?

Regulation and Registration

To begin with, you will need to do some research before you can proceed. Individual states and territories have their own rules in this area, but these may be augmented or even overruled by local legislation as well. You need to determine whether the trees in question are registered as they may be indigenous or have some specific heritage. If they are regulated, then they may be of a certain height or circumference or may have a canopy that is of a specific size.

Permit Time

If you find that your trees are regulated or registered, then you will probably need to apply for permission before you can act. You won't be able to cut them down if they are very badly affected unless you get written approval from the regulator, and you may also have to get a permit before you make any significant modification. This means that you may not be able to lop off part of the tree to try and save the rest, or may have to supply evidence from an expert to accompany your application.

Pruning

Generally speaking, you are allowed to prune these trees without any permission, so long as it does not affect the overall appearance of the tree, or its ability to bear fruit. To be safe, however, you should always refer to the regulations so that your work does not inadvertently cross the line.

Removal Process

No matter what, some trees may be beyond salvage and, from a safety point of view, may need to be removed. You will nevertheless need to get the appropriate permission first and should always work with a skilled arborist in any case.

Expert on Hand

When you do work with an expert, they will be able to identify the cause of the disease and specify why removal is the only appropriate course. They will be able to help you with the application and, importantly, ensure that the work is done safely and effectively.
