Two tips to follow if one of your trees develops a disease
If one of your trees develops a disease, here are two tips you should follow.
Use a tree removal service
Whilst it is sometimes possible to save a diseased tree, it usually needs to be cut down, unless your arborist happens to spot an early warning sign of the disease's presence before it's caused any major damage. Given this, you will probably need to use a tree removal service. It's important to get the removal of this tree carried out quickly, as in its diseased state, it could be dangerous.
For example, if the disease has weakened the tree's branches, any winds that occur whilst you're delaying the tree removal could make these branches break off. These airborne branches could hit someone, smash a window or damage your roof tiles. Similarly, if the disease enters and causes damage to the tree trunk, the trunk could collapse and ruin the lawn, flowerbeds or other property features that are near it. In short, although getting the tree removed may seem like a hassle, it could protect your property and those living in it from harm.
Don't keep the removed tree trunk and branches
Whilst arborists will usually offer to take away the debris they create when they remove a client's tree, some people prefer to keep the branches and trunk and either use them as firewood or for craft projects. However, if the tree you're getting removed is diseased, you must not do this and must instead let the arborist take it away.
If, for example, you leave the branches and cut-up trunk pieces in a pile in your garden and burn them in your fire pit over the course of a few weeks, you may accidentally infect your other trees with the same bacteria that caused the aforementioned tree to become diseased. This is because when you handle this diseased wood, you may get some of the bacteria on it on your hands. If you then place your hands on your other trees, you could infect them with this bacteria. You might then have to get these trees removed.
If you're determined to keep the debris, you should keep it in one spot and handle it with one pair of gloves that you only use for picking up this wood. This should ensure that you don't unintentionally pass the bacteria on this debris onto the healthy trees in your garden.
